Space-saving solutions, including retractable ones, are an excellent option for those who have to deal with small spaces in which they still want to fit everything they need without sacrificing anything, or they can be used to add a touch of originality to any room. Furniture that transforms into something else is well suited to the modern philosophy of a hectic life where people play several different roles: they like the idea of a home where they can live, study, rest, work, see friends, all in one space. A wardrobe bed is definitely an option that makes a room versatile, optimising centimetres and adding dynamism.

Two possibilities for a wardrobe bed

When we talk about a bed that is also a wardrobe, we mean, as the term itself implies, a piece of furniture that can be both a bed where you can sleep and a wardrobe where you can store your clothes. It can be declined as a bed that is designed as a loft above a storage structure with drawers and shelves underneath it, or as a bed that disappears into a wardrobe. The first option is used particularly in children’s rooms, the second is valid for a small room, in one where you want to hide the bed or for a space dedicated to guests.

The loft bed, positioned at height, is often used in children’s rooms. It brings them the charm of having an elevated bed, which can be reached by a ladder, and underneath you have space to store your wardrobe, thanks to a structure with drawers. Other furniture such as a desk is often integrated with the wardrobe bed. The combination saves centimetres by exploiting the height through the raised position of the bed, and creates compact and practical rooms.

If the bed ‘hides’ in the wardrobe…

The concept behind a bed that disappears into the wardrobe is different: it is a true hide-a-bed, which when not in use is “stored” in a wardrobe, thus not being visible. There are vertical retractable versions, to take advantage of the height, or horizontal, for a fairly low and long wardrobe. Both single and double beds of this type can be found. Including a storage space at the sides of the bed frame that is “raised and lowered” is a clever space-saving solution, because it allows you not to lose centimetres. Obviously it should be used judiciously, with the right tools for storing clothes, e.g. high hangers at the sides of the bed or drawers and shelves. Organisation in a wardrobe bed is basic!

For guests, you can provide a wardrobe bed

As mentioned, a foldaway bed can be placed inside a wardrobe in the guest room, but not only. Not in every home is there enough space to provide a room for friends or relatives, and often, even if there is, if you rarely have people staying over, it is not created. A wardrobe bed can be used only when needed as a bed and serve as a wardrobe, closed, the rest of the time. It can be placed in a study, in the living room, or as a second bed in a room, perhaps that of children who wish to occasionally host friends.

Not space-saving, but design. An idea to make the room dynamic

You can, however, choose a wardrobe bed as a design element that combines originality and functionality. You will have a wardrobe, which as mentioned is always handy, and at the same time you can decide when to show the bed and when not to, even at different times of the day.
