Metal kitchens: when and why choose this type of kitchen?

Metal kitchens

Thanks to their minimal and professional appearance, metal kitchens are an excellent option to consider, especially for those who want a modern, durable and low-maintenance interior design.

There are many possible combinations and configurations available, and all of them allow you to adapt the specific furnishing project to your needs.

When and why is it worth choosing a metal kitchen?

The advantages of metal kitchens can be appreciated from both a practical and an aesthetic point of view. Firstly, these kitchens are easier to clean than those made from alternative materials, such as wood.

To clean metal surfaces, all you need is a damp cloth and some mild detergent. Maintenance is also very low: metal lasts a long time, is not affected by humidity and shows minimal wear. The only risks you run are related to small scratches caused by using pots and kitchen utensils, and possible dents. Not much of a problem, then.

It’s no coincidence that resistance is one of the most appreciated aspects of metal kitchens. Years later, the worktops and elements in this material are practically always in excellent condition, even after intense use.

But that’s not all. The clean and essential look is another advantage that shouldn’t be underestimated. Metal gives a feeling of rigour and precision that is perfect for spaces furnished in a modern, contemporary or industrial style.

How are metal kitchens designed?

The first decision to make when designing a metal kitchen is what role you want the metal to play. So, you can decide to use metal for the wall units, the worktops and the sink. Alternatively, you can decide to use a combination of materials, choosing for example steel wall units and stone worktops. Or you can have wooden wall units and a brass worktop. The possible choices are therefore very varied.

Immediately after, you can move on to selecting the materials to be used for the different components. When it comes to metal kitchens, the first solution that comes to mind is steel, which is the material used in professional kitchens and is particularly appreciated for its resistance and practicality of use. However, there are also other solutions to consider: brass, for example, is ideal for both rustic and industrial-style spaces, while aluminium is light and functional, and is perfect both on its own and together with wood.

For a good final result, it is essential to define the most suitable layout of the different elements. In this sense, you need to consider the layout of the room, the needs of those who will use the space and the strengths of the kitchen design you want to emphasise.

A fundamental aspect that influences the aesthetics of the room is the finish of the surfaces. Very often, shiny metals are chosen, as they convey a sense of cleanliness and brightness, but in modern designer kitchens  matte finishes or metals with an antiqued effect are frequently used.

Finally, the design of metal kitchens is influenced by the general furnishing style chosen for the house. For example, for a metal kitchen to be installed in a loft, you could opt for a mix of metal and modern dark coloured surfaces. On the other hand, for a minimalist kitchen in a modern apartment you could consider a linear layout with an island, with steel and light wood surfaces.

What do you need to know about metal kitchens?

Compared to traditional kitchens, metal ones are more practical and more resistant. The use of smooth and solid surfaces for both wall units and worktops makes each kitchen functional and easy to keep tidy, even when used very intensively on a daily basis.

We have already mentioned that these kitchens are very resistant, they don’t suffer from daily wear and tear and they are not affected by humidity or sudden changes in temperature. The main precaution to be taken when using this type of kitchen is therefore regarding the type of cleaning products used. To avoid damaging the metal surface, it is best to avoid using abrasive products, limescale removers or aggressive products.

To bring out the design and special features of the kitchen, it is also essential to choose coverings that are in harmony with the general atmosphere. The colour of the walls also influences the final effect, as do the lighting and furnishing accessories. The inclusion of contrasting decorative elements — such as natural wood shelves or opaque glass lamps — can help warm up the environment and personalise the space in an elegant way that is consistent with the chosen style.

Any other useful suggestions? If you want to emphasise the minimalist character of the kitchen you can opt for light and bright colours, while if you want to create a warmer and more intimate atmosphere you can choose a metal such as brass, to be combined with dark woods or modern black surfaces. All this without forgetting that the ideal solution is always a custom-made kitchen.
